Honeywell Aerospace achieves two autonomous flights, demonstrates complex multi-aircraft ISR mission

Progression from initial Hivemind Enterprise training to a coordinated two-aircraft intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance mission took only six weeks

PHOENIX, October 13, 2026 — Honeywell Aerospace (Nasdaq: HONA) today announced the successful completion of two autonomous flight demonstrations, including a coordinated intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) mission involving two autonomous aircraft operating collaboratively.

The milestone highlights Honeywell Aerospace's ability to rapidly integrate and deploy advanced autonomy capabilities using open architecture technologies. After beginning training on Shield AI's Hivemind Enterprise platform in late April, Honeywell Aerospace engineers completed the company's first autonomous flight just six weeks later.

The initial demonstration took place July 8 in Plymouth, Minnesota, using Honeywell Aerospace's BFD-SE8 multirotor aircraft. The aircraft autonomously executed a planned mission, including takeoff, route navigation, dynamic rerouting around a no-fly zone and autonomous return to base.

Building on that success, Honeywell Aerospace recently completed a more advanced demonstration near Phoenix involving two autonomous aircraft equipped with Honeywell Aerospace's o480 inertial navigation system. During the flight, the aircraft collaborated to execute a coordinated ISR mission, autonomously sharing target information and dividing mission responsibilities to accomplish mission objectives.

"Open architectures are changing the pace of innovation in aerospace, and this milestone demonstrates how Honeywell Aerospace can rapidly translate advanced autonomy into real-world capability," said Todd Giles, Senior Vice President of Engineering and Chief Technology Officer, Honeywell Aerospace. "By combining our expertise in avionics, navigation, sensing and autonomy, we are helping create a scalable foundation for the next generation of autonomous aircraft and mission systems."

Following the July autonomous flight, Honeywell Aerospace engineers expanded the capability by developing and deploying an AI-based target detection and tracking model. The team built and validated the mission in simulation before conducting flight testing in Minnesota and Arizona.

During the Oct. 8 demonstration, a scout aircraft used onboard cameras and Honeywell Aerospace's AI model to detect, identify and track a target. The aircraft then shared target coordinates with a second autonomous aircraft, which independently navigated to the target area, completed its assigned task and returned to base alongside the scout aircraft.

The demonstrations showcase Honeywell Aerospace's ability to integrate its own sensing, navigation and AI technologies within an open autonomy framework, accelerating development while enabling increasingly sophisticated multi-platform operations.

The effort builds on Honeywell Aerospace's July 2026 memorandum of understanding with Shield AI to develop an autonomy software stack using Hivemind Enterprise. The companies are now exploring deeper integration between Hivemind and Honeywell Aerospace's avionics, navigation and sensing technologies, with future applications across larger uncrewed aircraft platforms and commercial aviation.

"Honeywell Aerospace engineers moved from initial training to autonomous flight in a matter of weeks," said Tom Schaefer, Vice President of Hivemind Enterprise at Shield AI. "By leveraging Hivemind Enterprise for core autonomy functions, the team was able to focus its efforts on developing mission-specific capabilities, including its target detection and tracking models."
